I have searched the net for quite some time, but only found some fuzzy 3 view drawings and couple of semi-scale plans for the Standard Cirrus and original Cirrus.

We describe a method for retrieving cirrus particle size information on a near-global scale 50 deg S to 50 deg N using currently available satellite data from ISCCP. The initial results of this near-global survey show that the peak frequency of cirrus crystal effective diameter De for hexagons is about 70 #m, the mean value corresponding to a #m radius for an equivalent sphere.
The survey also reveals that about 14% of the small crystal sizes are less than 23 #m in diameter. The. Get this from a library. A near-global survey of cirrus particle size using ISCCP.

Introduction Cirrus clouds play a significant role in the energy budget of the earth‐atmosphere system by their effects on the transfer of radiant energy through the atmosphere [Hansen et al., ], and they are critical to understanding feedback processes that regulate or modulate the climate response to many low clouds that have a cooling effect on solar radiation Cited by: Like the second-generation ISCCP-FD, it includes all upwelling and downwelling, shortwave and longwave radiative fluxes at the top of the atmosphere (TOA), at three levels in the atmosphere, and at the surface using a complete radiative transfer model, developed from the GISS GCM ModelE with improved observations of the physical properties of.

Using optical scattering theory, the size of a particle is related to the measured scattering cross section. The par- ticle size distribution n(r) is approximated by a histogram ni =n(r;1ri) defined as the numbers of particles whose ra- dius is within a set of size bins 1ri =(ri, ri + 1i).
Determining cirrus particle sizes from passive IR speetroscopy alone requires comparing the obser- vations against model calculations. Palmer et a/. have shown that particle size (for assumed spherical ice particles) is correlated with slope of the continuum between 10 and 12/(m (Fig.

The retrieval scheme uses phase functions based upon hexagonal crystals calculated by a ray tracing technique. The results show that global mean values of D(e) are about 60 micro-m. Han et al. To retrieve cirrus particle. Aerosols can act as cloud condensation nuclei and ice nuclei, resulting in changes in cloud droplet/particle number/size, and hence altering the radiation budget. This study investigates the interactions between aerosols and ice clouds by incorporating the latest ice clouds parameterization in an atmospheric general circulation model.
The simulation shows a decrease in effective ice cloud Cited by: 2. midlatitude cirrus. Plots and average equations for area versus particle size are shown for various particle habits, and can be used in studies involving radiative transfer.
